I was introduced to bitcoin today by a friend, and have learned a little about how it works, after years of thinking it was some weird gift card thing. So, I have two questions:

Question 1: you can get these by brute force "mining". Apparently you solve math problems with your computer, and earn some. So, with that being said, why in the hell would you earn money for doing arbitrary math problems with a computer? What do the people behind bitcoin get out of this? And I heard they keep making it harder to mine. WHY?

Question 2: is this even legit legal tender, or just some weird creepy thing used by drug dealers and kidnappers?
