This question is for someone in Bitcoin Core. When you setup a new node the bitcoind has to download all the chain (111GB today) and this is perfectly reasonable. What I do not understand is why the bitcoind has to read all the blockchain and validate it. It would be sufficient to have the hash of the blk####.dat files and compare with a trusted server. This would save almost a day of verifications in setting up a new server. Is there any reason why this is not done?
